OCR guide

How to Scan Handwritten Notes to Text on iPad

Good OCR begins with a clean image. Flatten the page, remove shadows, keep every line in frame, and treat recognition as a draft that needs review.

Practical workflow

The process, step by step

  1. 1Use diffuse, even light and avoid a shadow from the iPad or phone.
  2. 2Flatten the page and keep the camera parallel.
  3. 3Frame the complete note at a readable size.
  4. 4Review the result against the page.
  5. 5Correct important errors before grouping or summarizing.

Fix the image before fixing the text

Blur, perspective, folds, and low contrast remove information before OCR begins. A second photo is often faster than correcting a poor result line by line.

Test your own handwriting

Recognition quality varies by script and vocabulary. Use the printable test sheet to compare representative headings, paragraphs, numbers, and subject terms.
